Crane Customer Showcase: Zack Roy’s “Dr. Dirt” FJ-Inspired Revolution 2.0 on Crane 14-Bolt Axles
Every once in a while, a customer build comes through that pushes creativity, engineering, and style all at the same time. Zack Roy’s Revolution 2.0 four-seater — named “Dr. Dirt” — is exactly that kind of rig. Inspired by the Toyota FJ lineage he loves, Zack’s buggy blends iconic old-school looks with modern horsepower, advanced suspension, and of course, a full Crane Axle drivetrain beneath it.
Zack is a lifelong Toyota wheeler, and bringing elements of that style into this buggy was essential from day one. To achieve the look:
- A genuine FJ-40 hood was selected
- The front bib was hand-built from 1/8" 5052 aluminum
- An original FJ-40 grille was narrowed and shortened to match the new front profile
These elements gave “Dr. Dirt” an unmistakable identity before the chassis ever touched dirt. Although the styling nods to Toyota heritage, underneath the bodywork sits a purpose-built machine centered around Crane Axles, engineered to handle big horsepower, big travel, and big abuse.

Front & Rear Crane 14-Bolt Axles
Both ends of “Dr. Dirt” feature Crane’s strongest platform:
- Crane 14-Bolt Housings
- Crane Magnum Knuckles
- Crane Unit Bearing System (with ’05+ unit bearings)
- Crane 40 Spline-Compatible Components
- Crane Reinforced Mounting & Geometry
Stuffed inside the housings are:
- RCV 40 Spline Axle Shafts
- 40 Spline Spools
- Premium bearings, seals & hardware
To give a long-wheelbase, four-seater buggy incredible maneuverability:
- Crane steering axle components
- Integrated rear steer
- High-strength links
- Wide turning radius control
This allows “Dr. Dirt” to carve tight trees and technical lines like a much smaller rig. To make sure the Crane Axles had something worthy to contain, Zack went with:
Mast Motorsports 427ci Gen V LT Engine
- Big displacement
- Crisp throttle response
- Modern reliability
- A perfect match for 40-spline drivetrain components
Behind it sits
- Turbo 400 transmission
- Atlas transfer case
Suspension
- Radflo 2.0 coilovers
- Radflo 2.5 bypass shocks
- Tuned for speed, control, and big-hit absorption
Interior
- PRP Seats for all four passengers
- Rugged Radios communication system
- Garmin Tread Baja GPS — the centerpiece of the custom dash
While Crane Axles provide the backbone of the entire rig, the build itself was treated with an incredible amount of craftsmanship:
- Custom aluminum body panels
- Hand-fabricated FJ front end
- Clean TIG work throughout
- Precision link geometry
- Thoughtful interior layout
Every tube, tab, bracket, and weld is part of what makes this buggy one-of-a-kind — and with the upcoming full tear-down, final welding, and powder coat, “Dr. Dirt” is only going to get better. We joined Zack for the very first shakedown run at Adventure Off-Road Park in South Pittsburg, Tennessee — and not only did the buggy perform flawlessly, but the FJ-inspired face instantly made it one of the most recognizable builds on the trail.
