Tech Insight
A 4.56 ratio is commonly recommended for Jeep TJs running 33"–35" tires, especially with automatic transmissions or heavier trail setups. It helps restore power lost from oversized tires and improves drivability both on-road and off-road.
Carrier breaks occur when the ring gear mounting position changes between ratio ranges. This means some factory carriers cannot accept deeper gear ratios without replacement.
Proper setup requires accurate pinion depth, backlash, preload, and tooth contact pattern adjustment. Professional installation is strongly recommended.
