Yukon GM 8.5" Open Carrier Case for 28 or 30 Spline Axles - 2.73 & Up
YUKYC G26010481
This Yukon GM 8.5" standard open carrier case is designed for rear and select front differential applications using 2.73 and numerically higher gear ratios with either 28 spline or 30 spline axle shafts. The carrier case is intended for differential rebuilds, gear ratio changes, or replacement of damaged factory carrier assemblies in GM 8.5" axle applications used across passenger cars, trucks, SUVs, and vans.
Carrier selection is critical during gear ratio changes because GM 8.5" differentials use carrier breaks based on gear ratio range. This carrier is designed specifically for 2.73 and higher ratios and accepts both 28 spline and 30 spline internal configurations. The bare carrier case design allows builders to reuse or install the desired spider gears and internal differential components for the intended application.

Fitment Notes:
- Fits GM 8.5" axle applications only
- Designed for 2.73 and numerically higher gear ratios
- Compatible with both 28 spline and 30 spline internal configurations
- Some applications use rear axle configurations while select 4WD trucks use front axle applications
- Verify spline count, carrier break, and axle type before ordering
Tech Insight
GM 8.5" differentials use carrier breaks that determine which carrier case is required based on the installed gear ratio. Using the incorrect carrier offset can prevent proper backlash adjustment and ring gear alignment during setup.
Open carrier cases remain a popular option for restoration, daily driving, and custom differential builds because they allow builders to select specific internal components and axle spline configurations. In many GM 8.5" applications, upgrading from lower numerical gears to deeper ratios requires changing the carrier to maintain correct ring gear positioning and preload adjustment.
